Our Story

10 Years of Thai Cooking, Served at 5 Tables in Doncaster

Charm Thai Cafe is led by Head Chef Rin, who spent over 10 years cooking Thai food across South Yorkshire before opening her own kitchen here. Her career includes a long stint at Thai Garden Cafe in Manvers, briefly at Khao Niew in Barnsley, and Happy Cha Bubble Tea where she ran the Thai food side. Charm is the next step - her own kitchen, run her own way, with her signature dark noodle soup on the menu.

We took over a tired Thai cafe on Copley Road that had lost its way. Dated decor, dated kitchen, no spark. A lick of paint, new tables, new flooring, and a properly modernised kitchen later, Charm Thai Cafe opened with one goal: do Thai food the way it should be done.

We watched local Thai restaurants get complacent. Smaller portions, higher prices, food that didn't taste like proper Thai food. So we built something different. Five tables only - intimate Thai dining the way it should be. Authentic Thai pastes and ingredients sourced direct from Thailand - the same ones used in Bangkok kitchens. Spring rolls, dumplings and fish cakes handmade by Rin in our kitchen, not bought in pre-made. Sauces prepped daily by Rin and finished in the wok per order. Rin taste-tests every plate as she cooks and isn't afraid to ask for honest opinions. That's why our regulars keep coming back, and why people drive in from across South Yorkshire.

  • 10+ years Thai cooking experience
  • Chef-led independent restaurant
  • Authentic Thai ingredients from Thailand
  • Spring rolls, dumplings & fish cakes made in-house
  • Vegan, vegetarian & halal options
  • BYO alcohol - no corkage

What is the best Thai food in Doncaster?
We're proud to be Doncaster's highest rated Thai restaurant with a 5.0★ Google rating. Every dish is cooked fresh by our authentic Thai chef using traditional recipes and quality ingredients.
What does authentic Thai food actually mean?
Authentic Thai food uses real Thai ingredients - curry pastes, fish sauce, palm sugar, kaffir lime leaves - prepared the way they are in Thailand. We use the same pastes used in Bangkok kitchens, imported directly from Thailand. The difference is in the balance: sweet, sour, salty and spicy working together rather than any one flavour dominating.
How spicy is Thai food really?
Thai food has a wide range. Pad Thai is mild and sweet. Green curry has a clean, herbal heat. Jungle curry (the one without coconut milk) is the most intensely spicy dish on a traditional Thai menu. We cook to your preference - just let us know when you order and Rin will adjust as she cooks.
Should I order a starter and a main, or share dishes?
In Thailand, meals are typically shared with several dishes arriving together rather than in strict courses. In a restaurant setting like ours, one starter per person followed by a main each works well for most groups. For a group of four, two or three mains to share plus a starter each is a good approach. Either way works.
What is the difference between green, red and yellow Thai curry?
Green curry uses fresh green chillies for a herbal, fragrant heat. Red curry uses dried red chillies - deeper and slightly more earthy. Yellow curry contains turmeric and dried spices, giving it a milder, warmer flavour closer to South Asian curries. All three use coconut milk. Jungle curry is the one without coconut milk if you want a thinner, hotter curry.
What should I order if it is my first time eating Thai food?
Start with something approachable: chicken satay as a starter, Pad Thai or green curry as a main, and mango sticky rice for dessert if it's available. Once you've got your bearings, a stir fry or one of the other curries gives you a broader picture on your next visit. We're happy to talk you through the menu when you arrive.
