Why Halal Thai Is Worth Seeking Out
Thai food and halal don't often appear together on the same menu in the UK. Most Thai kitchens lean heavily on pork - in stocks, in stir fries, in the classic crispy belly pork dishes - and plenty use shrimp paste or fish sauce throughout. That makes it genuinely hard to find a Thai restaurant in South Yorkshire where someone who eats halal can order freely rather than picking around the menu. Search for halal restaurants in Doncaster and most results are curry houses or grills, not Thai, which is exactly the gap we set out to fill.
We took a different approach from the start. Halal chicken and beef are on the menu by design, not as an afterthought, which means the bulk of our dishes - the curries, the stir fries, the noodles, the soups - are open to you. The curry pastes we use are imported from Thailand and contain no pork. The result is proper Thai cooking, with the same balance of sweet, sour, salty and spicy you'd expect, and halal meat where you want it.
If you'd like the full picture of what's on and what isn't, our guide to halal Thai food in Doncaster walks through it dish by dish.
In the Kitchen
How Rin Cooks for Everyone
Every dish at Charm Thai Cafe is cooked to order. Rin, our Head Chef, has spent more than 10 years cooking Thai food across South Yorkshire, and that hands-on, dish-by-dish approach is what makes halal options straightforward for us. When you tell our team you'd like a halal dish, Rin prepares it with halal chicken or beef from the start - it isn't pulled from a pre-made batch.
We're an honest, independent kitchen rather than a certified halal restaurant, so we'll always be straightforward with you: pork dishes such as our crispy belly pork and pork dumplings are not halal and are clearly separate on the menu, and we don't offer halal lamb. What we can do is make the large majority of the menu work for you, cooked the same careful way as everything else. If you're ever unsure about a dish, just ask when you order and we'll talk you through it. The same dish-by-dish approach also means most halal mains can be adapted as gluten free on request.
