The Mildest on the Menu
What Makes Massaman Curry Different
Massaman curry is unlike any other Thai curry on the menu. Where green and red curries lead with chilli heat and fresh aromatics, massaman is slow-cooked, gently spiced and deeply comforting - closer in character to a Persian or Indian-influenced braise than a typical Thai dish. That's because it is. Massaman arrived in southern Thailand via Muslim spice traders centuries ago, and the influence shows in every bowl.
At Charm Thai Cafe on Copley Road, Rin uses authentic Thai massaman paste imported directly from Thailand - the same paste used in Bangkok kitchens. The paste goes in first to bloom the spices, then coconut milk is added to build the sauce around potatoes, onion and roasted peanuts. Every curry is cooked to order. If you're after authentic Thai food in Doncaster and don't want heat, massaman is the one.

The Flavour Profile
What Massaman Curry Tastes Like
Massaman is sweet, nutty, gently spiced and rich. The heat level is very mild - the warmth you feel comes from cinnamon and cardamom rather than chilli. The coconut milk gives it a creamy body, while the peanuts add depth and the potatoes make it genuinely filling. It's the kind of curry you find yourself mopping to the last drop.
All Six Curries
Massaman vs the Other Curries
All six Thai curries are on the menu at Charm Thai Cafe. Here's how massaman sits alongside them. Full details on the Thai curry page.
Massaman Curry
Rich, mild and nutty. Warm spice from cinnamon and cardamom. Potatoes and roasted peanuts make it the most filling curry on the menu.
Panang Curry
Thick, creamy and intensely flavoured with ground peanuts in the paste. Lower sauce volume than massaman, more of a coating.
Green Curry
Herbal, fragrant coconut broth. Fresh green chilli heat with lemongrass and kaffir lime. Lighter and brighter than massaman.
Red Curry
Deeper and earthier than green, with dried red chilli. Full coconut milk body and a slightly more robust heat.
Yellow Curry
Gentle and mildly spiced with turmeric and dried spices. A warmer, more approachable character - good for first-timers.
Jungle Curry
No coconut milk - the only one without it. Hot, clear broth with fresh herbs. The boldest on the menu by some distance.
