Thai Massaman Curry

Coconut milk, potatoes, roasted peanuts and authentic Thai paste from Thailand - cooked to order at 67 Copley Road, DN1 2QP

The Mildest on the Menu

What Makes Massaman Curry Different

Massaman curry is unlike any other Thai curry on the menu. Where green and red curries lead with chilli heat and fresh aromatics, massaman is slow-cooked, gently spiced and deeply comforting - closer in character to a Persian or Indian-influenced braise than a typical Thai dish. That's because it is. Massaman arrived in southern Thailand via Muslim spice traders centuries ago, and the influence shows in every bowl.

At Charm Thai Cafe on Copley Road, Rin uses authentic Thai massaman paste imported directly from Thailand - the same paste used in Bangkok kitchens. The paste goes in first to bloom the spices, then coconut milk is added to build the sauce around potatoes, onion and roasted peanuts. Every curry is cooked to order. If you're after authentic Thai food in Doncaster and don't want heat, massaman is the one.

  • Authentic Thai massaman paste imported from Thailand
  • Full-fat coconut milk, potatoes, onion and roasted peanuts
  • Warm spices: cinnamon, cardamom, star anise
  • Choice of chicken, prawn, beef, pork or tofu
  • Gluten free - ask when you order
  • Vegan option available on request

The Flavour Profile

What Massaman Curry Tastes Like

Massaman is sweet, nutty, gently spiced and rich. The heat level is very mild - the warmth you feel comes from cinnamon and cardamom rather than chilli. The coconut milk gives it a creamy body, while the peanuts add depth and the potatoes make it genuinely filling. It's the kind of curry you find yourself mopping to the last drop.

πŸ₯œ Roasted Peanuts
Ground into the paste and added whole - the peanuts give massaman its distinctive nutty depth and richness
🌿 Warm Spice
Cinnamon, cardamom and star anise set massaman apart from every other Thai curry - aromatic rather than hot
πŸ₯₯ Coconut Body
Full-fat coconut milk gives the sauce a creamy richness that carries the warm spice notes beautifully

Common Questions

Massaman Curry Questions

How spicy is massaman curry?
Massaman is the mildest curry on our menu - often described as having virtually no heat at all. The warmth comes from cinnamon, cardamom and star anise rather than chilli. If you normally avoid spicy food, massaman is the one to order. At Charm Thai Cafe we serve it at the traditional mild level by default.
What is in a Thai massaman curry?
Massaman curry is made with authentic Thai massaman paste, full-fat coconut milk, potatoes, onion and roasted peanuts. The paste contains dried chilli, lemongrass, galangal, cinnamon, cardamom and star anise. At Charm Thai Cafe the paste is imported directly from Thailand - the same paste used in Bangkok kitchens.
Is massaman curry gluten free?
Yes - the massaman curry paste is gluten free, as is the coconut milk. To eat gluten free, ask our team when you order and we will use gluten free soy sauce and noodles where needed. All six Thai curries at Charm Thai Cafe can be adapted as gluten free.
What protein goes best with massaman curry?
Beef is the most traditional pairing for massaman - the slow-cooked richness of the sauce suits beef well. Chicken and prawn also work. At Charm Thai Cafe we offer chicken, prawn, beef, pork or tofu. Halal meat options are available - ask when you order. Pork is not halal.
Is massaman curry vegan?
The standard massaman paste contains shrimp paste, so it is not vegan. We do offer a vegan curry option - ask when you order and Rin will use a suitable paste with tofu or vegetables as the protein. The coconut milk itself is naturally vegan.
Can I order massaman curry for delivery in Doncaster?
Yes - we deliver across Doncaster for Β£2, up to 8 miles. Call 01302 210408 to order and pay by card over the phone. Collection is also available from 67 Copley Road, DN1 2QP. Open Monday and Wednesday to Saturday, 12pm to 9pm.
