Armthorpe sits about four miles east of our kitchen on Copley Road, and we deliver there often. The drive from us takes around ten minutes - out past the racecourse, down toward Nutwell Lane and into the village proper. Whether the order is coming from the streets around Mere Lane and Church Street in the older part, or one of the newer estates on the western edge by the M18, we cover the whole village.

Armthorpe is a substantial place - around 14,000 people - and the orders come from across the patch. The streets running off the Hatfield Lane shopping parade, the homes near Sandall Park on the Doncaster side, the area around St Leonard and St Mary's Church on Church Street, the newer developments near Shaw Wood - we have been to all of them. Armthorpe sits to the east of Doncaster, an easy run out past the racecourse. The village grew up around the Markham Main colliery in the early twentieth century and is still a former pit village in character, even though the mine closed in the 1990s. The high street and the Hatfield Lane shopping parade are the obvious centres of activity.

Beyond the houses, Armthorpe is surrounded by wooded areas - Shaw Wood, Crowther Wood and Sandall Beat - which make it feel more rural than the population would suggest. The M18 cuts past the eastern edge, and the village is now closer to the IKEA and Next distribution sites than people from outside the area realise. For us, it is a straightforward run that finishes inside fifteen minutes from the moment you phone.
