Made by Rin, Not Bought In

Starters Made In Our Kitchen

Most Thai restaurants don't make their own starters. Spring rolls come in from a wholesaler, dumplings come pre-made in a box, fish cakes get bought in ready to fry. It's quicker and easier - we get it. But at Charm Thai Cafe in Doncaster, every starter is made in our kitchen by Rin.

Spring rolls hand-rolled by Rin. Dumplings folded by hand. Fish cake mix made from scratch. Moneybags filled and tied individually. Satay marinated overnight. It's a slower way to run a kitchen than ordering in wholesale frozen starters, but it's why our starters taste different - and why customers searching for authentic Thai food in Doncaster keep finding their way to us.

How They're Made

What Handmade Actually Means

If a restaurant calls something "handmade", it should mean something. Here's what it means in our kitchen.

01

Spring Rolls

Filling prepped from scratch - cabbage, carrot, vermicelli, soy, garlic. Wrappers laid out, filling spooned in, rolled by hand, sealed. Stored frozen and cooked per order so the wrapper crisps up properly.

02

Fish Cakes

Fresh fish blended with red curry paste, lime leaf and fish sauce. Mixed by hand to get the right springy texture. Formed into discs in our kitchen, then cooked per order.

03

Satay

Chicken or pork strips marinated overnight in turmeric, lemongrass, coconut milk and Thai spices. Threaded onto skewers and grilled per order. Peanut sauce made from scratch.

Common Questions

Thai Starter Questions

Are your Thai spring rolls handmade?
Yes. Every spring roll is handmade in-house by Rin - we don't buy them in pre-made or wholesale. The same goes for our dumplings, moneybags, fish cakes and satay skewers. Rin makes them from scratch in our kitchen, stores them frozen, and we cook each one per order. It's a slower way to run a kitchen than buying in, but the difference shows up in the flavour and the textures - particularly with the spring roll wrappers and the fish cake mix.
What Thai starters do you offer at Charm Thai Cafe?
Our handmade Thai starters include vegetable spring rolls, chicken spring rolls, prawn and chicken dumplings, moneybags (crispy parcels filled with seasoned pork), Thai fish cakes (tod mun pla), chicken satay skewers with house peanut sauce, sesame prawn toast, salt and pepper chips, spicy chicken wings, esan sausage, and crispy chicken or prawn starters. Each one is handmade in our kitchen by Rin - not bought in pre-made or wholesale.
Are your Thai starters gluten free?
Unfortunately, our starters are not suitable for a gluten free diet. Spring rolls use wheat-based wrappers, dumplings use wheat dough, and the batter on items like the crispy chicken and prawn toast contains wheat flour. For coeliac and gluten-intolerant diners, please head straight to our main course menu - all of our mains can be adapted as gluten free using rice noodles, gluten free soy sauce and our scratch-made Pad Thai sauce.
