Kirk Sandall sits about four miles north east of our kitchen on Copley Road, on the far side of Edenthorpe. The drive takes around ten to twelve minutes - up the Thorne Road and across the railway line into the village. Whether the order is coming from the streets in the old Pilkington garden village around King George Square, Pilkington Road and Whitehall Road, the homes on the Doncaster Road side near the Glasshouse pub, or the newer estates spreading out toward the canal and the Stainforth direction, we cover the whole patch.

Kirk Sandall is part of the Barnby Dun with Kirk Sandall civil parish - one of the smaller Doncaster villages by population but with a distinctive layout because of how it was planned. The streets are short and orderly, with grassed squares at the centre rather than a traditional village green, and the orders come from across the patch. The streets near St Oswald's old church, the homes near the Magnolia Close junction by the Junior School, the area around the railway station - we have been to all of them. No minimum order.

Kirk Sandall is unusual among the Doncaster villages because most of what stands today was planned and built in a single decade. The Pilkington Glass company arrived in 1922, picking the site for its canal access and its proximity to coal and sand, and the firm built a garden village for its workforce alongside the new factory - houses around grassed squares, bowling greens, tennis courts, two churches and a workers' club. The plan was for 2,000 houses; around 400 were built before the Wall Street Crash and the Depression stopped the scheme.

The Pilkington plant closed in 2008, but the layout of the worker housing is still recognisable, and the social history runs deep. The Vitrolite glass that came out of Kirk Sandall in the 1920s and 1930s clad the Savoy Hotel bathrooms and the Daily Express buildings in London, Manchester and Glasgow. The Glasshouse pub on Doncaster Road still carries the name of the original 1934 Kirk Sandall Hotel - Heritage Doncaster has a detailed write-up of the village's social history if you want the longer story. The Anglo-Norman St Oswald's Church, declared redundant in 1979 but kept in trust, is what is left of the original mediaeval Sandal Parva that the new village largely replaced.
