Mild, Golden and Comforting

What Makes Yellow Curry Different

Thai Yellow Curry (Gaeng Luang) is the gentlest member of the Thai curry family. Where green and red curries lean on fresh or dried chilli for their character, yellow curry is built around turmeric and warm dried spice - closer in feel to a South Asian curry than the sharper, herb-forward curries elsewhere on the menu. It's often the curry we suggest first to anyone who wants real flavour without much heat at all.

At Charm Thai Cafe on Copley Road, Rin uses authentic Thai yellow curry paste imported directly from Thailand - the same Mae Ploy paste used in Bangkok kitchens. The paste is cooked through in coconut milk to build a golden, mellow sauce around potato, cauliflower and onion, then finished with your choice of protein. Every curry is cooked to order.

  • Authentic Thai yellow curry paste imported from Thailand
  • Full-fat coconut milk, potato, cauliflower and onion
  • Gentle turmeric and mild dried spice
  • Choice of chicken, prawn, beef, pork or tofu
  • Naturally gluten free yellow curry - just ask, and we'll use gluten free soy sauce across your meal
  • Vegan option available on request

The Flavour Profile

What Yellow Curry Tastes Like

Yellow curry is mellow, mildly sweet and gently spiced. Turmeric gives the sauce its golden colour and a warm, earthy note rather than any real heat. The coconut milk keeps it rich and smooth, while the potato makes it a genuinely filling curry. It's a good choice at the table if someone wants full flavour without competing with a spicier dish.

🟑 Turmeric Warmth
Turmeric is the backbone of the paste, giving yellow curry its colour and a gentle, earthy warmth rather than chilli heat
πŸ₯₯ Coconut Body
Full-fat coconut milk carries the spice and gives the sauce a smooth, rounded richness
🌿 Gentle Spice
Dried spice notes sit in the background - comforting rather than sharp, and easy to eat every day

Prawn Yellow Curry

A lighter option - the sweetness of prawn works nicely against the mild, golden sauce.

All Six Curries

Yellow Curry vs the Other Curries

Yellow Curry

Gentle and mildly spiced with turmeric and dried spices. A warmer, more approachable character - good for first-timers.

Massaman Curry

Rich, mild and nutty. Warm spice from cinnamon and cardamom. Potatoes and roasted peanuts make it the most filling curry on the menu.

🌢 Very mild

Panang Curry

Thick, creamy and intensely flavoured with ground peanuts in the paste. Lower sauce volume than yellow curry, more of a coating.

🌢 Mild to medium

Green Curry

Herbal, fragrant coconut broth. Fresh green chilli heat with lemongrass and kaffir lime. Sharper and brighter than yellow curry.

🌢🌢 Medium

Red Curry

Deeper and earthier than green, with dried red chilli. Full coconut milk body and a slightly more robust heat.

🌢🌢 Medium

Jungle Curry

Common Questions

Yellow Curry Questions

Is yellow curry the same as green curry?
No. Our Thai Yellow Curry (Gaeng Luang) uses a milder, turmeric-based paste, while green curry is made from fresh green chillies and has more heat. Both use coconut milk and imported Thai curry paste from the same Mae Ploy range.
Is yellow curry spicy?
It's one of the mildest curries on our menu - often described as having very little heat at all. The warmth comes from turmeric and dried spice rather than chilli. If you normally avoid spicy food, yellow curry is a safe order.
Is your yellow curry gluten free?
Yes - the yellow curry paste is gluten free, as is the coconut milk. To eat gluten free, ask our team when you order and we will use gluten free soy sauce and noodles where needed. All six Thai curries at Charm Thai Cafe can be adapted as gluten free.
Can I get yellow curry vegan?
Yes. Coconut milk is naturally vegan, so a tofu or vegetable yellow curry needs no substitution. Ask when you order and Rin will use a suitable vegan paste.
What comes with yellow curry?
Thai Yellow Curry (Gaeng Luang) comes with potato, cauliflower and onion in a coconut milk sauce, served with jasmine rice. Chicken, prawn, beef, pork and tofu are all available.
Can I order yellow curry for delivery in Doncaster?
Yes - we deliver across Doncaster for Β£2, up to 8 miles. Call 01302 210408 to order and pay by card over the phone. Collection is also available from 67 Copley Road, DN1 2QP. Open Monday and Wednesday to Saturday, 12pm to 9pm.
