A Thai Street Food Classic
The Satay at Charm Thai Cafe
Satay is one of the defining dishes of Southeast Asian street food - marinated meat threaded onto skewers, grilled over charcoal and eaten with peanut sauce. At Charm Thai Cafe on Copley Road in Doncaster, we serve chicken satay and pork satay, both marinated in Thai spices before grilling.
The peanut sauce is made from scratch in our kitchen by Rin. Most restaurants use a jar or a ready-made base. Rin doesn't - the satay sauce is one of the things made entirely from scratch here, and the difference is noticeable. If you're looking for proper Thai food in Doncaster, start with the satay and you'll know what you're dealing with before the main course arrives.

- Marinated in Thai spices before grilling

The Flavour Profile
What Thai Satay Tastes Like
The satay skewers have a slightly charred, caramelised exterior from the grill with the spiced marinade working into the meat. The peanut sauce is rich and creamy with a background warmth from chilli and the subtle sweetness of coconut milk. The cucumber relish alongside cuts through the richness. Together they're one of those combinations that makes complete sense - two or three skewers disappear quickly.
Two Options
Chicken or Pork Satay
Both versions use the same Thai spice marinade and are served with the same homemade peanut sauce. The difference is in the meat.

The Homemade Peanut Sauce
The peanut sauce at Charm Thai Cafe is one of a small number of sauces Rin makes entirely from scratch. It uses ground peanuts, coconut milk, Thai spices and a balance of sweet, salty and spiced flavours built in the kitchen rather than opened from a packet.
Most Thai restaurants outside Thailand use a pre-made satay sauce base. The result is recognisable but flat. A scratch-made peanut sauce has texture, depth and a freshness that holds up through the meal. It's worth ordering the satay at Charm Thai Cafe for the sauce alone.
Ground Peanuts
Real peanuts worked into the sauce base give it texture and depth. The consistency is thick enough to coat the skewer without pooling at the bottom of the dish.
Coconut Milk
Full-fat coconut milk gives the sauce body and a gentle sweetness that balances the savoury peanut base and the warmth of the chilli.
Thai Spice Balance
Lemongrass, galangal and a careful balance of fish sauce and palm sugar give the peanut sauce its distinctly Thai character - different from Malaysian or Indonesian versions.
