1. The Villages
Five villages, one Doncaster kitchen
Brodsworth, Marr, Hickleton, Barnburgh and High Melton sit scattered across the countryside west of Doncaster, each small enough that a dedicated restaurant of any kind is rare. For a proper sit-down meal, or a takeaway that isn't a chain, most people already head into Doncaster town.
Charm Thai Cafe is on Copley Road, a straightforward run in from any of the five villages, most of it along the A635 or A630. Head Chef Rin cooks a full Thai menu from scratch each evening, in a five-table restaurant built around getting the food right rather than turning tables quickly.
With 186 five-star reviews on Google, Charm Thai Cafe is South Yorkshire's most-reviewed 5-star Thai restaurant on Google.
- Ten to fifteen minutes from any of the five villages
- Five tables, intimate by design
- Every dish cooked to order
- Authentic Thai pastes imported from Thailand
- Free evening parking on Copley Road
2. Getting Here
Getting here
From Brodsworth: around fifteen minutes via the A635, past Marr and into Doncaster. Brodsworth Hall and Gardens sits right on this route if you want to make an afternoon of it before dinner.
From Marr: the shortest run of the five, roughly ten to twelve minutes straight along the A635 into town.
From Hickleton: around thirteen minutes via the A635, joining the same route as Marr and Brodsworth traffic.
From Barnburgh: around twelve minutes via High Melton and the A630, or via Mexborough depending on which side of the village you're on.
From High Melton: the closest of the five, around ten minutes via the A630 through Sprotbrough.
Parking on Copley Road is free in the evening, and Trafford Way multi-storey is two minutes' walk from the restaurant if you'd rather not worry about a space.
Make an evening of it: if you're coming from Brodsworth, Barnburgh or High Melton, it's easy to combine dinner with a visit to Brodsworth Hall and Gardens beforehand - the English Heritage house and gardens sit right on the A635 route in. A walk round the grounds followed by dinner on Copley Road makes a full evening out of the trip.
3. Why Charm Thai
A proper Thai kitchen, not a bolt-on menu
None of the five villages has its own Thai restaurant, and options across this stretch of rural Doncaster are limited to pubs and the occasional takeaway. Charm Thai Cafe is neither. Every dish on the menu is Thai, cooked to order by Head Chef Rin using curry pastes imported from Thailand - the same ones used in Bangkok kitchens - and sauces prepared daily in her own kitchen.
The restaurant has five tables. That's deliberate. It means every table gets proper attention rather than being one of forty covers turned over in an evening. BYO with no corkage and no service charge on any bill keeps the cost honest too - the menu price is what you pay.
For a night out from any of these villages, that combination - specialist cooking, a small room, and no hidden extras - is hard to find closer to home.

BYO, no corkage, no service charge
Wine, beer or spirits can all come along with you, with no corkage charge for opening or pouring any of it. For something more in keeping with the food, Chang and Leo are stocked at nearby shops.
Every bill is free of a service charge, whatever the size of the group. What's printed on the menu is what gets charged. With mains typically ten to fifteen pounds and drinks bought in at shop prices, a proper night out from any of the five villages doesn't need to cost much more than the food itself.
6. Dietary Options
Dietary options
Rin adapts the gluten-free menu using Tiger Tiger rice noodles, a certified gluten-free oyster sauce and imported curry pastes that are naturally gluten free. Wheat wrappers rule out the starters, so flag any allergy before ordering and the kitchen takes it from there.
On the vegan and vegetarian side, tofu and vegetables stand in across curries, Pad Thai, Pad See Eew, stir fries and soups. Egg is left out of vegan Pad Thai and Pad See Eew altogether, and the vegan oyster sauce is a mushroom-based alternative.
For halal diners, chicken and beef dishes qualify, though pork stays on the menu and halal lamb isn't stocked. There's no formal certification on the kitchen, but halal protein choices appear throughout the menu.
Book a table: Phone 01302 210408, or book online at charm-thai-cafe.resos.com. Open Monday and Wednesday to Saturday, 12 noon to 9pm. Closed Tuesday and Sunday. Five tables means booking ahead is worth it, especially Friday and Saturday evenings. For groups up to fifteen, the whole restaurant is available for private hire.
